Separation Anxiety

i have a serious problem. I am addicted to my puppy. I only think this is a problem, because sometimes it prevents me from doing things or getting excited about things. Shia sleeps in our bed. She is my cuddle monster. Jared usually only wants to cuddle for 11 minutes and then he’s over it, plus most of the time he goes to bed later than I do, which defeats my cuddling hopes and dreams. So when we got Shia, she was not allowed to sleep in the bed for about 6 months, then she tore her ACL, and we both felt so bad for her because she won’t sleep on a dog bed, and she likes her kennel but she hates to have pillows or blankets in there. So it was just the hard ground. When she had her torn ACL we wanted her to be comfy as possible, since she pretty much had to lay down for 9 weeks! This is when the attachment began. Shia now cuddles me to sleep every single night. I wake up if she even flinches or twitches because we sleep so dang close. Jared loves it because Shia and I spoon and he gets the other side of the bed all to himself.

Now she’s been sleeping on our bed for about a year, and it’s totally her bed now too. I can’t sleep without her there. I love to cuddle up to her. Now when we have plans to go out of town or not be at home, where Shia can’t come then I have to have my parents watch her. They are good with her, and she likes to play with her cousin puppies. But I can’t sleep without her gentle soothing snores!

All this is because next week, I am staying about 30 minutes away from home in a hotel from Tuesday - Saturday {with Jared — thank heavens}. Of course, Shia L. Spinelly can’t come with us, and I have been excited to go to the convention, but I am for sure going to have separation anxiety, and I probably won’t sleep to well.. I am like this when Jared isn’t home too. But that’s only happened like twice, and we’ve left Shia more times than I care to remember, so that’s why this post is geared toward the pup. I can’t sleep at all without my husband, imagine if I didn’t have either. Oh boy. Heart attack.

Anyway, are any of you like this?

Am I totes being crazy? It is like a legit concern of mine.

  1. My boyfriend and I just got our puppy on Saturday and this is how I am already. I leave the house for ten minutes and I want to go home and see my puppy. We were thinking of having him sleep in his kennel but like you, my boyfriend comes to bed later than me and it's nice to have someone to cuddle with! :)

    1. WHAT!! I want to see your new baby puppy. I am so puppy hungry that I just need to be reminded how much work they are when they are that little. Shia is my little baby though, she will be spoiled her entire life. We girls need cuddle partners! Not cool having boys that stay up so late!

  2. oh sam is not allowed to sleep in the bed if william is home.
reason 1. he is 90 lbs and about as tall as i am when he stands like a human.
reason 2. we have a queen bed and he would not fit.
but armani on the other hand is my bed hog. i will sleep on the floor before i make him sleep on the floor. when ever i come to bed and he is in my spot i will gladly sleep on the bottom of the bed rather than wake him up and move him.
    FREAK! maybe.
    MOTHER OF THE YEAR. totally.

    1. I need to be reminded which one is which? Sam is the boxer? Or is that Armani? I love them both, either way. I think that if we had another puppy, that we'd have to get them their own room with a bed in it ;) Shia is too spoiled to sleep on the floor now! I am like her like you with Armani. I will be uncomfortable all night instead of wake her up. I think we get mother of the year awards!! We also probably get FREAK awards... dang!

  3. I'm not even a pet person, at all. And I will never allow animals inside the house (Angel's allergic to cats and dogs, I have a good reason!). But just yesterday we got two 8 week old kittens for our outdoor pets (you can do that in the country!) and today I went out to a movie and to do grocery shopping and I kept thinking about them and had to look and make sure they were still safe as soon as I got back home. Oh no, I might be getting just a tiny bit attached. It's just that they're so little!

    1. ha ha! Poor Angel ;-) Never knowing the joy of losing your sleep to a giant puppy dog who takes up the entire bed! I was like that with Shia when she was a pup, I'd leave the house, and just wonder about her all day. I bet you will get so attached to your kittens!! How do you even raise outdoor animals? I want to see photos of these baby kittens that you ARE totally going to fall in love with! :)

    2. The kittens have already made it to my blog! Story of life for any blogger: all new life happenings and additions are blogged about in a relatively timely fashion!
We live on seven acres--so mostly the cats just run around and explore and probably have lots of fun. We feed them cat food, and Angel is planning to build them a house out of scrap wood for when winter comes, but mostly they just get the run of the place. Where we live it's pretty common for people to have barn cats or just outdoor cats to keep the mice population down!

    3. That is so cute! I have 2 stray cats in my neighborhood, they just roam around and are fatter than any house cat that I've ever seen. They are pretty nice too. I am going to head to your blog now and see the cute kitties!!

  4. Too bad I don't really know you... because I have a feeling that we would be best friends. Does that sound crazy? hahah

    2. You're welcome =) I think we'd be besties too! Not crazy at all, Ive met some really good friends through blogging that I've never met in real life!

  5. I am literally the exact same way with my dog Ringo. I love him to pieces and Zac always inevitably stays up later than me and Ringo is just patient enough to let me smother him with my love while we sleep. Zac travels occasionally for work and it's so nice to have my little (70lb) boy to occupy all my love while he's away!

I'm totally with you about separation anxiety from my dog! I'm going to Mexico next Saturday for a week and I'm more worried about not seeing my dog than Zac, mostly because my boyfriend has technology and poor pup doesn't understand all that! Glad to know I'm not alone :)

    1. Seriously!! That sounds just like Shia! She is 65lbs, and she is the best cuddler when she is sleepy. Jared is always up late doing random things, and even if shia doesn't want to go to bed she will lay by me with her eyes wide open. Creepy, but also really cute. I just love her!!

We went to mexico last year and it's so rough to not be able to see or 'talk' to them while you're gone. With people you can skype or facetime or just call, with puppies you can't!! Good luck!

  6. I feel ya girl. My dog isn't a huge cuddler, but she always lays close enough to touch me...or right on top of me. When she isn't there I miss her like crazy! The hubs isn't super crazy about cuddling for more than two minutes, so she's a great filler ;)

    1. YES! We are in the exact same position! My hubs is the total same way. He cuddles for tops like 5 minutes, and my pup is ONLY cuddly when she is sleepy, and then she will cuddle all you want her too. I love that baby girl! She will also shift away during the night, and then wake up, and come cuddle again. So cute!

  7. I have an unhealthy attachment to my dog. Like to the point that I hate leaving her home alone just when I'm at work. I'll sleep on the edge of my bed with my legs hanging off just so Bella is comfortable on MY pillow! Glad I'm not the only one either!:)

    1. Bulldogs are just the greatest! You can't not be attached to them, because they have such huge personalities that make them seem like humans. I am the same with Shia!

  8. You are absolutely not crazy- an animal is like a child and becomes a part of the family! I'm like that with my bunny when I go away- I miss her cuddles!

    1. Totally!! I love bunnies. Animals are just another member of the family, you're totally right!

  9. I don't have this.. but I understand it. And I am VERY sure I will develop it when I get my puppy next week! Though we have agreed no dog in the bed... but like yourself it's bound to change.

    1. AHHH! I can't wait to virtually meet your puppy, I am so puppy hungry. We didn't allow shia in the bed, until she got her surgery, when she was about a year old, now she is in it every night. We still try and give her some restrictions like no bones on the bed!

  10. Ahhhh... you're not crazy. There is NOTHING wrong with loving your animals!!!! More animal owners should be like this. This inspires me to actually be nicer to our own dog. SO, thanks for the inspiration!!!!

  11. No shame, I'm addicted to my puppies too & they BOTH sleep on our bed. Needless to say, my husband wasn't thrilled with the idea but I just can't sleep without them with us! :)

  12. I also have puppy-separation-anxiety! Zorra cuddles with me too. Sometimes I'll wake up to her curled up on Mike's side. She just curls up into a little ball and off to sleep she goes! After I take her out in the mornings I usually get back into bed with her to pet her and relax for another couple minutes before getting up and getting ready for work. She starts out my day great! Ah- Puppies are just the best!!

    1. You are the cutest puppy mom ever, and I just adore Zorra. I love any photos you post of her on instagram. She has the cutest face and fluffy ears!! I have to force Shia to wake up, and kiss her bye! She is the opposite of a morning dog!!

  13. Oh man! I can soo relate to this! There is no love like the one you have for your fur baby! I always feel guilty when I leave my little Braxton. New follower here!

    1. Totally! Having a fur baby is the best feeling. They are the perfect love bugs. I feel guilty leaving Shia too! She comes with us everywhere on the weekend, so when I have to leave her for work monday morning, I get major guilt!

    1. Shia was crate trained too, and now she loves her crate. She will go in there and chew on bones, or take naps, so when we have to have her in there. I don't feel too bad. Thank heavens, because I am the same way, if she cries my heart melts and I want to cry too!
